Twin Towers-Never Forget

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit Riverfront Park in Salem, Oregon, and view the Field of Flags.  There are no words to describe the emotion that you feel when looking out across the entire park lined with flags in honor of each person that lost their life that day, and also the military personnel that have lost their lives since then.  There was also a section honoring all of the Oregon Police and Firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

I’m sure each of us remembers where we were on that day, and at that time.  I was at Legacy Children’s Hospital with my son who had just finished up his battle with brain cancer, and was now on to physical therapy for a month.  We were living at the hospital at the time for a month.   We were getting ready for his first round of therapy for the day when the news report came on.   We spent the day with a lot of the staff in that wing as they would stop in to watch the news with us.  We were all horrified, there were a lot of tears,  and the wing was extremely quiet that day which is really strange for a children’s wing.    I remember being terrified that more was coming and that my other two children, husband and mother were in Salem which seemed so far away that day.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families who lost loved ones that day, and to all of the families of our service men and women that have lost loved ones  since then.

Where were you on 9/11?  Never forget!

This weekend, August 5th-7th has a great variety of choices for things to do in Salem, Oregon. I’m looking forward to checking out the first annual Salem Wine and Seafood Festival on Saturday.   Santiam Wine Company and Fitts Seafood are hosting this event from 1-4 pm at 1555 12th ST SE.  Local wine and seafood vendors will be featured.  Some of the vendors include Willamette Valley Cheese Company, Chef Bernard Malherbe  of the Crooked House Bistro, and Oregon Olive Mill at Red Ridge.  Live music will be performed by the Chris Lee Estes Band.  Admission is free and there will be free food and wine samples.

Another Salem favorite takes place this weekend at Wallace Marine Park on Friday. West Fest is a live music event and the gates open at 4 pm.

Redhawk Winery is doing a BBQ at 2995 Michigan City Lane from 1-5 on Sunday.  The cost is $15 and RSVP is required.

Enchanted Forest is celebrating it’s 40th Birthday this weekend and also hosting The Great Idea at Enchanted Forest. Dandy Warhols will be playing.  Acoustic acts begin at 1 pm and the headliners start at 5 pm on Friday.   Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Ranch Records located at 237 High St in Salem.

Last, but not least, the Couch Races are coming to Salem for the first time.  Races begin on Saturday at noon at the Soap Box Derby track at Bush’s Pasture Park.  It’s free to watch the races, or $20 to race a couch.

The last weekend in July is always exciting at Riverfront Park in Salem, Oregon. That is the weekend that the Bite and Brew is held.  This fun event includes live music, good eats and, of course, brew.  Carnival rides are also on site to provide some thrills.   The dates and times for this year’s Bite and Brew are July 29, 30 and 31st.  The Bite and Brew opens at 11 am on all 3 days.  The event schedule is packed full of great music and other entertainment.

Do you have a favorite Bite and Brew story to tell?  I do.  I went with a large group of girlfriends to enjoy some live music and check out all of the other entertainment, and one of my good friends met her husband in the beer gardens.   No Kidding!!  So  you never know what can happen at the Bite and Brew.
